my personal picks

Benvenuto Brunello 2024

Reading Time: 4 mins

Every November, there’s an event that marks a special moment in the Brunello world: Benvenuto Brunello

This year, just like every year since I moved to Montalcino back in 2008, I made my way to this beloved town, which has become my second home for over a decade, to join the celebration.

For those who might not be familiar, Benvenuto Brunello is a tradition, a grand festival where the new vintage of Brunello di Montalcino is presented to the world. Picture this: the town of Montalcino buzzing with excitement, the streets filled with winemakers, sommeliers, journalists, importers, and passionate wine lovers from all corners of the globe. It used to take place in February as the first big event of the year, but recently it has been moved to November. This change gives it a new role as a true preview of the vintage that will hit the market the following January. And I must say, it’s a magical way to kick off the season.

Last Monday, I set out to taste several dozen Brunello wines – not a small task, but one I eagerly look forward to each year. I don’t consider myself a wine critic or a journalist, and I certainly don’t assign scores or numeric ratings. Those of you who have followed me for a while know that my passion lies in discovering labels that embody a mix of quality, history, passion, and the faces behind the wine. These are the stories I love to share with the world, bringing a little piece of Tuscany into your homes.

Benvenuto Brunello 2024

The 2020 vintage tells a beautiful story of a warm growing season in Montalcino, one that shaped wines with approachable elegance and immediate charm. Unlike the cooler, more structured 2019 vintage, 2020 stands out for its generosity and readiness, offering wines that are incredibly enjoyable right from their debut.

What makes Brunello so extraordinary is how each vintage becomes a snapshot of its year, reflecting the climate and conditions that shaped it. The 2020s are a wonderful example of this: wines that celebrate the warmth and ripeness of the season while maintaining the authenticity and vibrancy of Montalcino’s terroir. It’s a joy to see how these characteristics come to life in the glass, making every sip a celebration of the uniqueness of the vintage.

So, while this list is not meant to be a definitive ranking of the “Top 3 Brunellos,” I do want to share with you my personal highlights – wines that I believe are worth discovering in 2025

SanLorenzo Brunello di Montalcino
Podernovi Brunello di Montalcino
San Carlo Brunello di Montalcino

SanLorenzo Brunello di Montalcino

This was one of the very first labels I included in the Toscana Wine Club, and it continues to bring me immense satisfaction. The 2020 vintage is youthful and fresh, with a beautifully intense red fruit profile that is vibrant but not overly ripe. There’s a remarkable structure here, with a personality that hints at excellent aging potential. This wine never disappoints – it’s like reconnecting with an old friend who always surprises you in the best way.

Podernovi Brunello di Montalcino

The Podernovi Brunello from San Polo comes from a single vineyard that I’ve had the privilege of witnessing come to life during my years in Montalcino. This vineyard has always fascinated me for its ability to produce wines that combine elegance and complexity in perfect harmony. The 2020 vintage is full-bodied and opulent, showcasing dark plum, cocoa, and a whisper of mint on the finish. Its finesse and captivating character make it a wine that stays with you long after the last sip.

San Carlo Brunello di Montalcino

At San Carlo, lovely Gemma welcomed me with her radiant smile, and the wine did not disappoint. This is one of those small, family-run wineries that I truly enjoy collaborating with – places where every bottle tells a story of dedication, passion, and tradition. The 2020 vintage is refined and elegant, with delicate floral notes and a silky texture. It’s the kind of Brunello that invites you to pause, reflect, and savor every sip – a true representation of the heart and soul of Montalcino.
