Rotta Segreta begins here
A project I’ve been quietly working on… is finally ready to be shared
Reading time : 5 min
I’ve been writing and rewriting this article for days now, going back and forth, trying to find the right words for something that feels very personal. It’s one of those moments where what I’m about to share carries a little more weight than usual… and maybe that’s why it took me longer than expected.
Because today, I’m not just telling you a story.
I’m introducing you to something that, in many ways, feels like a part of my journey.
This is how Rotta Segreta was born.
Last year, almost by chance, I found myself in a conversation with a consultant winemaker I deeply respect. We were talking about wines, about territories, about how much there still is to discover beyond the most well-known names. At a certain point, a simple idea came up.
What if, instead of only telling stories about wine, I started selecting one… personally? Not just a good wine, but a wine that had truly surprised me. One that I felt I could stand behind completely.
That moment happened on the slopes of Monte Amiata. A place that feels a little removed from the more obvious routes, where vineyards are slowly moving higher and higher, searching for freshness and balance in response to a changing climate. Up there, altitude becomes an ally, and Sangiovese expresses itself in a way that feels vibrant, lifted, and precise.
Together, we selected a 100% Sangiovese grown at high altitude. It has all the fruit you expect, but it never becomes heavy. There are no overripe notes, no sense of excess. Just clarity, energy, and a kind of balance that makes you want to go back to the glass. It follows a traditional path, with about 18 months in French oak and a further period in bottle before release, but what stayed with me was not just the technical side. It was the feeling.
A wine that works beautifully at the table, but that doesn’t necessarily need one. A wine you can open before dinner, or after, sitting outside, letting the evening unfold slowly. That idea of simplicity, without ever losing depth, is what led me to call it Alfresco.
Rotta Segreta (Secret Route) is the name I chose for this project because, in many ways, it reflects my own path. Over the years, I’ve found myself drawn to hidden territories, to smaller denominations, to stories that are not always immediately visible. This wine is the first step of a journey that starts in Tuscany, but that I know will continue to evolve.
The label tells part of that story. You’ll see migrating wild geese crossing the sky, tracing a route that feels instinctive and free. In the background, there is the outline of Monte Amiata, quietly present, almost like a reference point. It’s a simple image, but for me it holds the idea of movement, direction, and discovery.
The first vintage is 2022, with a total production of just 1,300 bottles.
During my last trip to the United States, I brought a few preview samples with me, but only shared them with a small group of clients I deeply trust, people whose feedback I truly value. Not only did they appreciate the wine, but many of them placed orders even before it was officially released. Some even asked me to sign the bottles, which is something I had honestly never done before… but of course, I said yes.
That moment, more than anything, made me realize this project was ready to begin.
Today, with this newsletter, I am officially releasing it, and as always, I wanted you to be the first to know. If you feel curious to be part of this journey, just contact me via DM to secure your bottles now and I would be very happy to share it with you.
Because in many ways, this project is also the result of everything we’ve already shared, and it would mean a lot to take this next step together.
Because in the end, that’s what fascinates me the most about wine. Not just what’s in the glass, but everything that surrounds it. The place, the people, the choices, the subtle differences that make each bottle a small world to discover.
And sometimes, all it takes is four wines to see it clearly.
Ciao,
Claudia 🍷
