Sparkling & Beyond
My WSET Adventure in Bubbles
Reading Time: 4 mins
This week, I took the D4 and D5 exams for the WSET diploma in London, an experience that was both intense and rewarding.
As I sat in the examination hall, surrounded by fellow wine enthusiasts from around the globe, I found myself reflecting on the profound journey of studying wine and the countless stories it holds.
Allow me to share a glimpse into my adventure and the lessons I’ve learned along the way.
The Wine & Spirit Education Trust (WSET) Diploma is regarded as one of the most prestigious qualifications in the wine world. It represents a rigorous academic pursuit that combines theory, practical tasting, and extensive research.
The diploma consists of multiple units, each diving deep into various aspects of wine and spirits, from production methods to regional characteristics. The journey is not for the faint-hearted; it demands dedication, time, and a genuine passion for wine.
I am proud to be on this path, as I firmly believe that in the world of wine, stagnation is not an option. Every exam is a stepping stone that opens new doors to understanding the complexities of different varietals and the stories behind each bottle. There is always more to learn, and the journey itself is as enriching as the destination.
This week’s exams focused on the captivating world of sparkling wines, a category that has always held a special place in my heart. Living in Italy, just a stone’s throw away from France, I’ve grown up with Italian and French bubbles as cherished companions at celebrations and quiet evenings alike. Yet, as I prepared for these exams, during hours and hours of study, I uncovered a treasure trove of sparkling wines from regions far beyond the familiar.
For instance, did you know that Australia is making waves with its sparkling wines, particularly in Tasmania? The cool climate and unique terroir have created an environment where producers are crafting exceptional méthode traditionnelle wines that rival those from Champagne.
Similarly, Spain’s Cava, particularly from the Penedès region, offers a delightful and diverse range of sparkling options, characterized by its unique grape varieties and traditional production methods.
Discovering Gusbourne – An English Excellence
One of the highlights of my WSET journey was visiting Gusbourne winery in southeast England, together with Diploma WSET fellow students. Nestled in the picturesque landscape of Kent, Gusbourne is part of the burgeoning English wine scene that is rapidly gaining international recognition. The region’s cool climate, coupled with chalky soils similar to those found in Champagne, has led to the production of high-quality sparkling wines that showcase finesse and elegance.
During my visit, I was greeted by passionate people who shared their commitment to quality and innovative practices. I had the pleasure of tasting a wide selection of their wines, including the Gusbourne Brut Reserve, which is a beautiful expression of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Pinot Meunier.
It was inspiring to witness how climate challenges can drive innovation, making English sparkling wines a true force to be reckoned with.
Tuscan Bubbles – Hidden Gems
Returning back home, I was reflecting about the fact that Tuscany is renowned for its iconic reds like Chianti and Brunello di Montalcino, but it is also slowly carving out a niche for its sparkling wines. With the rise of smaller producers embracing the Metodo Classico (traditional method), Tuscany is producing some remarkable bubbly that deserves attention.
One such gem is Castello del Trebbio Brut. This sparkling wine beautifully balances tradition and modernity, with grapes sourced from vineyards that benefit from significant temperature fluctuations between day and night. This diurnal variation is crucial for developing the acidity needed for high-quality sparkling wines. The result is a fresh, vibrant wine with notes of green apple and toasted brioche that speaks to the terroir of Tuscany.
Exploring these hidden bubbles has opened my eyes to the diversity within the region. Each producer brings their unique touch, showcasing the potential of Tuscan sparkling wines to stand alongside their more famous counterparts.
