Discover La Combàrbia Montepulciano

La Combarbia Montepulciano

Reading Time: 6 mins

When I started my entrepreneurial journey, I turned to LinkedIn to share my experiences, build connections, and grow relationships.

Little did I know that a simple message from Gabriele Florio, the founder of La Combarbia, would lead to such an inspiring discovery—a small but vibrant winery tucked away in the hills of Montepulciano.

After exchanging a few direct messages, I finally made time to visit La Combarbia. I was eager to learn more about the winery and the Montepulciano region, one of Tuscany’s most historic appellations, which often debates with Montalcino over which was the first to be awarded DOCG status—although the books do say Montalcino, but just by a hair!

Upon arriving, I met not only Gabriele but also Michela, whose warm personality and energy stood out right away. Michela has played a big part in giving the winery a boost, helping it reach new heights in just a few months since her arrival in the team. Her work is a reminder that even the smallest businesses can grow when they invest in the right people.

La Combarbia has a history that spans over 50 years, starting in the 1960s when Novilio Mariani established it in the charming area of Cervognano. The land here has been known for its excellent grape-growing conditions for centuries. In 2016, Gabriele Florio, took over the family business with a clear goal: crafting high-quality wines that honor the land and traditions of this region, while trying to ensure that every sip offers a truly delightful experience. The winery focuses on minimal intervention, spontaneous fermentation using local yeasts—staying true to the terroir. They produce limited batches of high-quality wines, including the famous Vino Nobile di Montepulciano DOCG, celebrated for its elegance and aging potential.

The name La Combarbia has deep local roots. It refers to an old crossroads where farmers would gather to chat and share stories over a bottle of wine, creating a sense of community that still echoes in the winery today. This sense of connection and tradition inspired the design of their logo, which beautifully symbolizes the spirit of the place.

This authentic estate covers approximately 25 hectares of vineyards, 7 of which used for traditional Tuscan grape varieties to flourish. The vineyard’s focus is on Sangiovese, the foundation of their distinguished Vino Nobile di Montepulciano. Mommolo and Canaiolo adds a touch of richness and depth to blend of Rosso di Montepulciano.

La Combarbia’s portfolio includes their flagship Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, a sophisticated red that captures the essence of the region, available in a prestigious Riserva –  but only in excellent vintages. Their Rosso di Montepulciano offers a vibrant and accessible red, perfect for any occasion. Additionally, they produce ICS, and I.G.T. (Indicazione Geografica Tipica) wine, which features innovative blends of their varietals, showcasing the winemaker’s creativity.

A quick historical note on the wine appellation Vino Nobile di Montepulciano DOCG:

The name “Nobile” in Vino Nobile di Montepulciano has deep historical roots dating back to the Renaissance. In the 16th century, the wine from Montepulciano was praised by Sante Lancerio, the cellar master of Pope Paul III, who described it as “perfectissimo” and suitable for noblemen. This association with nobility likely contributed to the use of the term “Nobile” in its name.

While the production of wine in the area goes back to Etruscan times, it was during the 17th century that Montepulciano’s wine gained prominence and began to be referred to as Vino Nobile.

The region’s unique terroir, characterized by a mix of sandy and clay soils, plays a significant role in the wine’s structure and elegance. The Nobile di Montepulciano is made primarily from a local clone of Sangiovese, further distinguishing it from other Tuscan wines. This noble history, combined with the exceptional quality of the wine, led to the prestigious DOCG status in 1980, cementing its place as one of Tuscany’s most esteemed wines.

As I savored La Combarbia’s Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, sitting in the cellar together with Gabriele and Michela, I was instantly captivated by its elegance and depth. The rich bouquet of ripe red berries, subtle spices, and the velvety tannins convinced me that this wine deserves a special place in our Toscana wine club selection.

I’m thrilled to announce that this exceptional Vino Nobile will be available for our members, with direct shipments right to your door. If you haven’t yet joined our Toscana wine club, now is the perfect time to do so and experience the exquisite taste of La Combarbia firsthand
