Winery closed for tourists?

Access granted for us at Valdicava winery in Montalcino!

Valdicava Brunello di Montalcino

Reading Time: 5 mins

A few weeks ago, I had the unique privilege of exploring Valdicava, a small, family-run winery nestled in the heart of Montalcino.

Though it is worldwide renowned for its exceptional wines, Valdicava is not typically open to the public for tours or tastings. This is largely due to their small scale, as well as their focus on quality and tradition, which has earned them numerous high-level awards but left little room for the trappings of commercial wine tourism. However, through my special connections, I was able to arrange a private visit, offering an experience that few have ever enjoyed.

Valdicava is a name that resonates deeply with connoisseurs of Brunello di Montalcino, one of the most prestigious wines in the world. The winery’s commitment to excellence is evident in every bottle, particularly in their Brunello di Montalcino DOCG. This wine is celebrated for its deep structure, elegance, and aging potential, often scoring above 95 points in critical international reviews. The 2019 vintage, for example, is noted for its expressive complexity, with layers of dark cherry, earth, and subtle floral notes, making it a standout even among its peers.

During our visit, we were graciously hosted by PierFilippo Abruzzese, the son of the owner, who not only opened the doors of the otherwise private cellar but also led us through an intimate tasting session. We sampled some of their finest offerings straight from the barrel—a rare and memorable experience that highlighted the winery’s artisanal approach and the pure expression of the Sangiovese grape.

To get a closer look at the stunning cellars and the ambiance of Valdicava, I’ve shared a video on instagram. You can watch it here!

What makes Valdicava truly unique is their meticulous vineyard management and winemaking philosophy. The vineyards, located in Montalcino, benefit from diverse terroirs that contribute to the complexity of their wines. Each vineyard is tended with care, utilizing sustainable practices that respect the land while enhancing the quality of the fruit. In the cellar, traditional methods are blended with precise, modern techniques to produce wines that are both authentic and refined.

One wine that particularly stood out during our tasting was their Brunello di Montalcino DOCG 2021 from the barrel. This wine captures the essence of Valdicava’s philosophy: a harmonious balance between power and elegance.

With its rich bouquet of wet flowers, dark cherry, and a touch of earthiness, followed by fine-grained tannins and a lingering finish, this Brunello exemplifies why Valdicava is a beacon of excellence in the region.

While Valdicava may not have a tasting room open to the public, its wines speak loud about the passion and dedication of the family behind it. I feel incredibly fortunate to have experienced this hidden gem firsthand and to share this story with you.

If you ever have the chance to enjoy a bottle of Valdicava, I highly recommend savoring it with the knowledge that you are tasting the fruit of extraordinary craftsmanship.
