Montalcino and its ancient stories of resilience

Montalcino landscape

Let me take you on a journey through the enchanting lands of Montalcino, a place I’ve often spoken of in the past for its beautiful landscapes and delicious wines. But today, I want to delve into the ancient history that makes this place so special in Tuscany.

It all began centuries ago, during the medieval era, when Montalcino was a bustling stop along the ancient route known as the “Via Francigena“, connecting Rome and, therefore, the Vatican, to the north of England. Pilgrims from far and wide would pass through, drawn by the promise of spiritual solace and the warmth of the tuscan hospitality. It was during these times that Montalcino wines, from the delicate Moscadello to the robust Brunello, began to earn their reputation.

During that era, not only pilgrims but also anyone going to the Vatican, noble families, and aristocrats would stop by. For Montalcino farmers and wine producers, it was easy to sell their wines directly at cellar doors to these travelers, eliminating the need for further distribution. They were just selling everything! Montalcino was a rich and wealthy place to live in.

But as the years passed, Montalcino faced its share of challenges. The modern world influenced their quiet landscape, with the highway “Autostrada del Sole” replacing the ancient road “Via Francigena” and altering the local rhythm of life. Suddenly, the streams of travelers dried up, leaving Montalcino people to navigate uncertain waters.

Yet, in the face of adversity, they refused to surrender. In 1967, a group of local producers and farmers came together to form the Brunello Consortium, to promote their wine beyond local sales they were used to. With their dedication and hard work, our beloved Brunello wine began to shine on the global stage, travelling miles and miles around the globe, and earning accolades and admiration from wine lovers worldwide.

Brunello di Montalcino history

The 1980s marked a turning point for Montalcino, as Brunello’s reputation reached new heights. With the support of influential publications like Wine Spectator, this beautiful wine found its way into the glasses of connoisseurs around the world.

As we ventured into the 21st century, Montalcino faced fresh challenges. Economic downturns and shifting market dynamics tested producers, but they stood firm in their commitment to quality and tradition. With the support of merchants and enthusiasts alike, they weathered the storms and emerged stronger than ever.

In the end, the story of Montalcino is not just about wine—it’s about resilience, innovation, and the enduring spirit of a community united by a shared passion. So, as you raise a glass of Brunello, remember the journey that brought it to your table, and the people who made it possible.

Cheers to Montalcino, where tradition meets triumph at every turn.
